Summer Update from the Queensway Terrace North Community Association
By Henry Swiech

Summer has finally arrived after a cool and wet spring.    I suggest you take a walk through our community to enjoy the beautiful gardens so many of our residents have planted with love and care.    Elmhurst Woods is lush with green vegetation and Frank Ryan Park is busy as ever with kids in the wading pool, at the play structures and teams slugging it out at the ball diamonds.    Will the tennis courts or basketball court produce star athletes someday?

Your Association Board and community volunteers had a busy April, May and June.    Since my last report we launched our community website, QTN.CA.    We're very happy with the positive response and the partnership with The News reprints has been enthusiastic.

The spring clean-up with the city's participation on May 1 was a resounding success.    The annual clean-ups are having a very positive affect with the worst garbage from past years removed.    Several longtime residents adjacent to Elmhurst Woods consider it a personal composter and have piled years of garden refuse in it.    This is an official conservation area.    A city by-law protects this area where there is no dumping of any kind allowed.    The city will be replacing and installing new No Dumping and Conservation Area signs.    Use a backyard composter.    The compost is excellent and free.

Phase two of our community tree planting initiative was a resounding success.    We're hoping this planting completes our expansion of Elmhurst Woods.    Although the trees are small and the grass tall, the children of this community will be the beneficiaries of this project.

We expect the rezoning of 931 Pinecrest Rd to be on the Planning Committee agenda this summer.    The May 20 public meeting made it clear this site is a poor one for an R4 rezoning and we'll continue to oppose it.

The resurfacing of Moncton Rd, Mossdale and Clarenda streets has been completed.    We'll continue to ask for improvements to our community infrastruture.    810 Norton Ave is slated for demolition and we hope a new house replaces it.

As reported in The News there is a good possibility of a new Habitat for Humanity home in our community.    Your Board supports this initiative, hopes it goes through and will rally community volunteers if needed.

There has been a rash of belligerent youth hanging out at the gazebo at Frank Ryan Park recently after the 11p.m. park closure.    As well, the fieldhouse was covered by grafitti "art" which the city will clean off shortly.    We have made the police aware of these activities and they have stepped up patrols to discourage this.    Local residents can help them by calling 230-6211 and reporting after-hours activity.    We need your support to make our park a safe and damage free place to enjoy.

You can contact the association by email at: qtn@monisys.ca or calling 820-2447.
