Ecology Ottawa QTN Tree Giveaway Event

Ecology Ottawa, in partnership with the Queensway Terrace North Community Association, will be co-hosting a tree giveaway event in our neighborhood.

Date: Saturday June 12, 2021
Location: Frank Ryan Park

Those interested must complete the mandatory pre-participation survey in order to opt-in to Ecology Ottawa’s Tree Program and be eligible to receive seedlings. Some personal information is collected in order for them to follow-up in a year’s time regarding the tree(s) you’ve planted. Though they are not asking which species you wish to plant, they do want to know how many seedlings you would like to collect, to a maximum of 25.

Ecology Ottawa’s Tree Giveaway Survey
Information on trees native to our region can be found here and here.

Here are some of the benefits you can expect from the planting of trees:

  • improvement in air quality
  • reduced energy costs due to cooler air
  • removal of harmful chemicals and release of oxygen
  • sequestering of carbon
  • improvement in water quality
  • urban beautification and stress relief
  • provision of fruits and nuts for urban wildlife and people
  • increased property value

Please note that this initiative is not limited to QTN. Many other communities are choosing to co-host tree giveaway events across the city. A calendar of these events can be found here. Feel free to share this information with anyone you think may be interested.

QTN Community Plant Share

Sharing local plants with other QTN residents helps them and adds to the greening of our neighborhood. Local plants are also more likely to grow well.  Perennials that need splitting or trimming can be put into extra plastic pots, containers or bags, watered to settle, and then offered to others during our QTN Plant Share Event for the month of May.

Plant drives will occur during the weekends of May 8-9 & May 15-16. To respect the provincial lockdown, we encourage no contact sharing and suggest placing plants at the end of your driveway or lot with signage and/or post on the QTN Facebook page.

Please print the attached QTN sign

As you walk through the neighborhood, you may find other plants that you would like to have.  We all benefit from sharing plants and perhaps plant knowledge as well.

QTN will promote the event so residents know what is happening.  Plants that are not picked up or wanted can be disposed of in Green bins.

Some ideas for sharing include:

  • Echinacea or Purple Cone Flower
  • Rudebeckia
  • Iris
  • Phlox (many different varieties)
  • Spring Bulb splitting (Lily, Canna Lily, Hostas, Gladiolas)
  • Ground covers, such a periwinkle and thyme, and border plants
  • Strawberry plants
  • Raspberry stalks
  • Rhubarb

Volunteers needed: Lets beautify the Elmhurst paths on March 30 & April 2!

We are calling all walkers, dog walkers, bird watchers, and anyone who likes exploring the trails in QTN.

We need your help to spread mulch along the paths in Elmhurst Park and are asking that as you finish your day tomorrow (March 30), to meet us at the corner of Alpine and Henley starting at 3:00 PM. Please bring your mask, a shovel or a rake, and if possible – a wheelbarrow.

Update: due to the amount of paths to cover, we will also be working on Friday April 2nd start at 8:00 AM until around 12:00 PM.

Update: Brent from Pilon Landworks (http://www.pilonlandworks.ca/ thank you!) will be helping the community with a tractor and shuttling mulch to the park entrances as of 10:00 AM. On April 2nd if you are:
  • Starting at 8:00 AM? Meet us at Alpine entrance
  • Starting at 10:00 AM? Meet us at the Elmhurst entrances

Why the short notice?

As part of the City’s Queensway Terrace Storm Sewer Rehabilitation project, a number of trees had to be taken down along the north side of Henley Street to make way for new infrastructure (storm sewer and sidewalk). Our natural environment  committee, along with many of your neighbours, arranged to have the mulch from this work kept on site and the City approved its use for beautifying local paths! Since the trees have just been cut, it is important that we spread the mulch as soon as possible.

We look forward to seeing many of you tomorrow!
