Connaught Park: Noise Mitigation and Landscape Plan for LRT

A noise study for LRT Phase II confirmed the need for noise mitigation through Connaught Park. It also found that the proposed berms would not be effective. It proposes a combination of three measures for the portion of the track from the fly-over to the tunnel: absorptive wall panels, a noise barrier wall, and rail dampers.

QTN members of the Public Advisory Panel continue to raise concerns about the adequacy of the noise study, particularly the lack of attention to the curve that goes to Baseline and the fly-over. We also continue to advocate for more sight mitigation in the landscape plan and increased attention to make it an attractive green space for the future.

In the meantime, choices are being made about the design of the noise wall and the plan for vines and tree-planting to make the wall more compatible with a park setting. The choice of materials for the noise wall will make a difference in how that space feels in the future. Quick-growing vines on the wall and planting trees for the longer term can help to maintain a park context. The landscape plan includes the use of small berms and a mix of types of trees to recreate a green space that is attractive and sustainable. Some residents want to have fruit trees included in the mix of trees planted, along with evergreens and deciduous trees. 417 westbound off-ramp at Pinecrest to close November 1 until Summer 2023

This post has been updated as the closure date was changed on October 29th from November 2nd to November 1st.

As per the City of Ottawa:

The Highway 417 westbound off-ramp to Pinecrest Road will close to the public overnight on November 1 until summer 2023. Motorists are encouraged to follow alternate routes, noted on the graphics below, to reach their destinations through the duration of construction. Cycling and pedestrian routes will remain open.

The closure is required as part of the work on the Stage 2 O-Train West extension. A trench will be built on the north side of the highway, to allow the train to travel under Pinecrest Road and highway ramps.

Information Session on Alpine Speed Humps (Oct 4)

There is an upcoming public consultation on October 4 about traffic calming measures proposed for Alpine Avenue. The community asked for a pedestrian crossover to help people travelling to and from Frank Ryan Park across Alpine Avenue at Henley. The city examined the crossing and the study found that the area meets the threshold for this kind of measure, but traffic is too fast for the engineering guidelines. The city is proposing to add speed humps on Alpine to slow down traffic approaching this busy crossing. The post-construction road design for Alpine will also include a bulb-out on the end of the new Henley sidewalk that will narrow the crossing for pedestrians.
